This post is Part 2 in our series on getting your home ready for fall! If you didn’t tackle the list from our last blog, there’s still time! Here are some more ideas for September to help you get organized and continue to transition your home from summer to fall.
1. Prep your yard and lawn care items.
Inspect and clean up outdoor trash containers. Replace any defective or leaky trash bins. Make sure you have the right equipment and supplies for any fall yard or garden work. If you have any plants that need special treatment or protection for colder nights, start that process now.
2. Organize outdoor summer items.
Now that summer is really winding to a close, this is a great time to take stock of all your outdoor summer items. Instead of just tossing everything into storage for another year, go through your summer toys, chairs, patio furniture, and sporting equipment. Toss or donate any items that have not been used or played with at all this summer—or even in the past year! This will not only help you know what you own but might reduce the amount of required storage space once you get rid of unwanted items. Consider using Marie Kondo’s KonMari method of organization to guide your sorting!
3. Get that garage gleaming.
Now that you have a nice clean car, clear out the garage to get ready to put the car in as the weather gets colder. Get the whole family involved by giving everyone an area to clean up or a task to do like sweeping or sorting.
4. Inspect your AC, furnace, or fireplace.
If you didn’t have your furnace/AC inspected earlier in the year, now is a good time to do so. Having your furnace regularly maintained is an excellent way to avoid a chilly problem when you need the furnace the most! If you have a fireplace, get the chimney inspected and acquire firewood for the season.
5. Make your bedrooms cozy and ready for cool nights.
Turn over mattresses that can be flipped. Get any fall bedding and blankets out of storage. Use the last of the warm weather to make sure it is clean, aired out, and ready to go for cool nights.
